7 November 2023Sibiu’s Christmas Market | A journey of the heart through the winter wonderland
Open from November 17th 2023. The Christmas market in Sibiu, also known as Hermannstadt, is an annual event that captivates every visitor. For me personally, Heide Göddert, this market has a special meaning. Born in Agnetheln, just 60 km from Sibiu, I myself was born just before Christmas Eve, a gift for my parents on that magical day. But it wasn’t until 2017 that I rediscovered my hometown and the Christmas market in Sibiu, after living in Germany since 1990. Having emigrated as a Transylvanian Saxon, I have the wonderful opportunity to enjoy the festive season together with my Romanian friends, in the company of my childhood friends from the region.
The Transylvanian Saxons who call this region home have very special memories of this Christmas market. For many of them, it is a place of childhood memories, where they enjoyed the festive season to the fullest. “For us Transylvanian Saxons, the Christmas market in Sibiu is a piece of home that we rediscover and experience every year. It connects us with our past and lets us relive the festive atmosphere from our childhood days,” says an enthusiastic visitor.
Every year, the Christmas market in Sibiu transforms the city into a true winter wonderland. The beautiful wooden huts that line the main square offer specialties from all over the region, from steaming mulled wine to sweet treats that smell of cinnamon and Christmas spices. Christmas carols are sung in the midst of this scenery, while the centrally located Christmas tree is decorated with twinkling lights.
“Sibiu turns into a magical place at Christmas time. The smell of cinnamon and mulled wine fills the air, and the wooden huts are full of handmade treasures and delicious treats,” says one enthusiastic visitor.
But that’s not all. Visitors have the opportunity to go ice skating or experience a magical ride on the carousel. The city tower can also be visited, from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the whole of Sibiu. Tourists from Germany and all over the world come here especially to enjoy the festive atmosphere day and night for three unforgettable days.
“The Sibiu Christmas Market is a jewel of Romania. It has this unique atmosphere that you can’t find anywhere else,” says another visitor.
This year, the Christmas market season runs from November 17 to January 2 and promises to transform the city into a fairy-tale place. Spectacular projections immerse each building on the grand ring into moving works of art, bringing the magic of the winter vacations to life in a unique way.
The variety of exhibitors and stalls at the fair offers an exceptional selection of gifts and seasonal products, from handmade souvenirs to delicious treats. But it’s not just the offerings and atmosphere that make this Christmas market so special. The special events and activities for children, such as Santa’s workshop, also make this market an ideal place for the whole family.
The Christmas Market in Sibiu is an event for everyone, regardless of age or budget. The expectations for this edition are high, but it promises to delight all visitors with spectacular projections and a unique shopping experience. The Christmas Market in Sibiu continues to be one of the main attractions during the winter vacations and will continue to bring joy and beautiful memories to all visitors. We cordially invite you to become part of the Christmas magic at this year’s Christmas market in Sibiu. We look forward to meeting you there and sharing the joy and magic of the winter vacations with you. Come and have an unforgettable experience at the Christmas Market in Sibiu!
And for those who want to immerse themselves even deeper in the festive atmosphere, I personally offer winter city tours of the Christmas market. With an audio guide in one hand and a mulled wine or punch in the other, explore the fascinating details of this magical place.
