A trip to Tara Hategului – Retezat is a journey into the past. You will discover vanished worlds, meet life-size dinosaurs and explore volcanoes and traces of a vanished sea. In the more recent past, you’ll see mountain landscapes, lakes and carnivorous plants left over from the Ice Age 10,000 years ago, and then admire the traces of the Romans in Sarmizegetusa Ulpia Traiana, as well as the first sites of Christianity – the Densus Church. And while you are in the area, don’t miss the famous “Salas virsli”, a local sausage specialty! To complete the experience, we also recommend a glass of wine made from Rachitova plums!

The mountain massifs around Tara Hategului have a rich network of marked trails. Among them, Retezatul stands out with its dense and well-maintained travel network, which ensures access to all major destinations in the massif. There are also several thematic trails in the region, both in the Retezat National Park and in the Gradistea Muncelului – Cioclovina Nature Park and the UNESCO International Geopark Tara Hategului.
