31 October 2023Bukovina – a unique experience worth experiencing!
Bukovina is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Romania. Located in the northeast of the country, it is a historical region that can be identified almost with the entire territory of Suceava County. At least five elements describe Bukovina: nature, history, culture, tradition and spirituality.
Mountains that cover more than half of the county’s area, more than 20 nature reserves and Calimani National Park, Slatioara Secular Forest – a UNESCO World Heritage Site where nature has survived for hundreds of years without human intervention – make Bukovina the right destination for nature lovers and outdoor activities.
Historical monuments, museums, traditions and customs, handicrafts are testimonies that speak of Bukovina’s past and the elements that define its culture today – people, lifestyles, customs of the place.
Bukovina is known worldwide for its painted churches and monasteries, true masterpieces of medieval art and architecture. Eight of them are on the UNESCO World Heritage List for their uniqueness and artistic value (Sucevita, Moldovita, Arbore, Voroneț, Humor, Patrauti, Probota and St. John the New from Suceava). The pilgrim comes here not only to delight his mind and eyes, but also to nourish his soul. Tourists come to admire the beauty of the medieval architecture and the vivid, natural colors in which biblical scenes, church altarpieces, the lives of Orthodox saints, portraits of Moldavian viceroys and their families are painted.
Tourists who are interested in the history and culture of Bukovina and want to have unique and authentic experiences should definitely include in their trip such sights as: Suceava History Museum, Suceava Castle, Museum of Bukovina Village, Museum “Art of Wood”, Art Museum “Ion Irimescu”, Vama Egg Museum, Museum of Boiled Eggs Moldovita, Marginea Black Ceramics Centre, Ciocanești Museum Commune – unique in the country and perhaps even in the world for the traditional national motifs carved on the facades of most houses in the municipality.
The gastronomy of Bukovina also offers a great variety. It is based on dishes prepared with natural ingredients and according to traditional recipes, which are well preserved in the family and carefully passed on to the descendants.
